This week students were introduced to the concept of multiplication! Many students have already had exposure to this skill, and can identify it with "repeated addition!" This year, we want to extend their prior knowledge into helping them find partial products. They need to realize that when we multiply, we are multiplying each place value of the greater factor by the other factor. This is best taught using the "area model". Students expand their greater value and multiply each part first. Then they combine those partial products together to find their final product.
