This cycle, we have been working with patterns and algebraic equations. Students have learned to look at a pattern and determine the rule by which the pattern follows. They first decide if the pattern is increasing (addition or multiplication) or decreasing (subtraction or division). Then they apply the pattern they think is correct to see!
Ex. 2,4,8,16, ___, ___ (The pattern is increasing, so try adding 2 each time. That doesn't work! Now try multiplying by 2 each time. That does work! The rule is multiply by 2, or as an expression it would be written as: 2n)
In algebra, we have been working with equations and expressions. Students know how to "plug in a value" for a variable when solving an expression. They have also learned how to solve an equation to find the value of an unknown variable.
Expressions have many answers.
Example: 2n + 3 (The value of this expression is dependent on the value of n)
Equations require an equal sign and have only one possible value for the variable.
Example: 2n + 3 = 17. n must be 7 to make this equation true!

HOMEROOM ONLY -
Writing - This week we began drafting our Indiana Research Papers. We have spent lots of time researching, and have worked hard to create very detailed reports. We will publish these pieces next week.
Word Study - WE ARE OFFICIALLY FINISHED WITH WORD STUDY!! :) As always, please continue to practice spelling and vocabulary skills when possible!
